As 2018 dawns, we’re examining a story that has dominated headlines for the better part of the past six years.

Syria is on many minds because of the millions either dead, wounded or made refugees.

2017 was a good year for President Bashar Al Assad, as forces recaptured major cities and large areas of rebel-held territory.

The Russian resort of Sochi is due to host a new round of talks in January.

But after so many failed negotiations, what kind of political settlement is possible?

Presenter: Hashem Ahelbarra

  1. The "syrian negotiator" whoever's interests he represents does not appear to be constructive you need a military approach initially to convince warring parties to negotiate it needs to be demonstrated to the warring powers how much power they actually have otherwise they will negotiate based on how much power they imagine they have. He also seems big on preconditions, I would not want him as a negotiator for this reason alone. No wonder the Geneva talks were not constructive, it will he interesting to see if the Sochi talks can at least produce some agreements to take to Geneva.

  2. Al Zazeeara was always anti-Assad. I thought Assad was fighting extremist like ISIS and he's somehow the bad guy? Doesn't make sense and it's not true.
