Two members of an armed opposition group known as Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) are given prison sentences by the Federal high court of Ethiopia on Saturday, December 30, 2017. The two defendants,  Ahmed Abdi and Ahmed Mohammed, were sentenced to 13 and 15 years in prison, respectively.

It is remembered that Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) gave a press release on December 29, 2017 titled “The EPRDF orchestrated war between nations in Ethiopia must unconditionally come to an end!”.

In the media release, the ONLF has sent an urgent request to all Ethiopian opposition political forces and the nation at large “to stand shoulder to shoulder to fight the oppressive regime until freedom, peace, and democracy is asserted in the country”.

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) is an armed opposition group fighting for the right of the people of Ethiopian Somali that live in and around the region formerly known as Ogaden. The front got international recognition in April of 2007 when it raided and attacked the oil field in Ethiopian Somali region that was operated by a Chinese company, China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC). The attack ended with the death of 65 Ethiopians and 9 Chinese.

Recently ONLF has dropped its secessionist agenda for self determination of the Ogaden region and has joined the rest of the opposition forces in the country to fight for freedom, democracy and unity of a sovereign and united Ethiopia.
