The president of Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) and recently released political prisoner, Dr. Merera Gudina, was given a hero’s welcome by thousands of residents of Ambo and Ginchi, it is reported.

The professor thanked the residents, especially the youth, who were gathered to welcome him at Ambo stadium. He promised to the gathered residents, the struggle to free the country from tyranny and build a free democratic Ethiopia will continue in earnest.

It is to be remembered, the Oromo Federalist Congress formerly known as Oromo National Congress,  has been at the forefront of the political struggle for the last 22 years since the inception of the party in 1988. The professor has also participated in political opposition during the former King, Haile Selassie and the military Government of Ethiopia (Derg) as member of All Ethiopian Socialist Movement. He has been imprisoned by the military government, Derg, for 7 years due to his opposition to the military rule and fight for rule of law and freedom.

Dr. Merera Gudina has endured several injustices for his opposition and fight for freedom. Among these are mentioned, the denial of promotion to professorship during his university days, been fired from his teaching position at Addis Ababa University, evicted from his rental property and imprisoned with trumped-up charges by the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
