Prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn submitted a letter of resignation from his post as the chair of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and prime minister of Ethiopia.
Prime minister Hailemariam is saying he is standing down of his own accord as the leader of the country and chairmanship of both of his own party Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Front (SEPDF) and the EPRDF in a bid to tackle the challenges the country is facing and facilitate the implementation of the solutions proposed by his party.
During a televised address, Mr. Hailemariam said his resignation has been accepted by his own party SEPDF and the executive committee of EPDRF. However, he added the final decision about his request to resign will be determined by parliament soon.
His desire to see a lasting peace and stability in the country, guaranteed democratic order and providing the appropriate response to a wide variety of constituents demands ultimately led him to resign of his own accord said Mr. Hailemariam.
Mr. Hailemariam said he will be staying at his post until parliament confirms his resignation and find his replacement.
Although Mr. Hailemariam insists the decision to resign is his, those who closely monitor the daily events unfolding in Ethiopia believe Mr. Hailemariam is made a scapegoat for the political crisis that is gripping the country and is asked to resign. Mr.Hailemariam is widely known to be a weak, symbolic leader and not known to have genuinely wielded power as the country’s prime minister.
