The jailed political activist and leader of Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) was released on Wednesday morning.
Dr. Merera Gudina was in prison accused of trumped-up charges since December 2016. The charges include, throwing the government by force, violating the Ethiopian state emergency proclamation and associating with terrorist groups.
Dr. Merera is known to be a hard critic of the Government. He has criticised the government for lack of rule of law, lack of freedom of speech and arresting hundreds upon thousands of Oromos and Amharas for staging peaceful demonstrations opposing the government policy.
The OFC leader became the first political prisoner to be released after Prime Minister Halemariam’s announcement of release a couple of weeks ago.
