It is reported, Dr. Debretsion managed to get only two (2) votes out of a possible 180 for his bid to become the chairperson of Ethiopian People Democratic Front (EPRDF) and that fact has become hot issue of discussion.

It was predicted the chairperson of Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Dr. Debretsion, will be elected as leader of the foursome coalition front EPRDF and eventually become the prime minister of Ethiopia. It turned out even TPLF members, that number 45 including himself, denied him their vote except one and as a result he only got two (2) votes making the prediction be proven wrong.

When the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was in the top position, he dreamt and designed to keep the chairperson and the prime ministership exclusive to Tigrians only. Even though the power will remain within TPLF for a while, the dream has started getting dimmer by the day.

The fight for the position of EPRDF chairmanship became only between Mr. Shiferaw Shigute and Dr. Abiy Ahmed, and at the last count, Mr. Shiferaw got 59 and Dr. Abiy received 108 or 106 (votes to be confirmed yet), it is reported. Mr. Demeke Mekonnen of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM), the favourite of TPLF and the expected winner, withdrew from contention at the last minute.

The chair of Oromo People Democratic Organization (OPDO), Dr. Abiy Ahmed, is believed to have received a resounding support from ANDM for his bid to become chairperson of EPRDF. Political analysts commented on various social Medias, if Dr. Abiy becomes prime minister of Ethiopia, he will be stonewalled by EPRDF not to raise the demand of citizens regarding freedom, justice and equality for all and justice to be served to the slaughtered innocent Ethiopians by the military force.

It is also indicated that key positions, including the National Intelligence and Security Services and the Ministry of Defense will not be accountable to Dr. Abiy Ahmed as they used to be to the deceased prime minister. Other analysts predict, unlike Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn, with his qualification and experience he will not be a doormat for EPRDF.
