On January 6, 2018 yet another boat on route to Europe transporting refugees from Libya capsized. The number of dead from this horrific accident has been rising, it is reported.
Survivors reported the boat was carrying about 150 passengers at the time of the accident. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) report indicates that 86 passengers were rescued while 64 others were reported dead. The search for more survivors proved not to be successful as the Italian rescue team was able to pull out only bodies of eight female victims.
Each year countless Africans fleeing political and economic crisis caused by dictatorial regimes take a very dangerous migration route to Europe through the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea. The UNHCR report indicates that several Africans die in the sea and others sold as slaves in Libya while trying to cross to Europe in the hope of escaping dictatorship and poverty.
