The Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO) replaces the existing chairman Lemma Megersa with Dr. Abiy Ahmed setting the stage for claiming the Prime Minister’s position vacated by former PM H/Mariam Desalegn. According the operating procedures of Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Party (EPRDF), the foursome party coalition known as the EPRDF, the prerequisite to become a Prime Minister is to be the chairman of one of the four parties.

These days the Oromo activists have been suggesting Lemma Megersa to compete for the PM position. However OPDO deliberately chose Dr. Abiy Ahmed as chairman making him the default candidate while keeping Lemma as vice-chairman and in control of Oromia as the state’s president. It has become the topic of discussion on social media why the popular president of the regional state of Oromia, Mr. Lemma Megersa, did not seek the PM’s spot.

The Executive Committee member of  Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Mr Getachew Reda, has told the Bloomberg news paper that Lemma Megersa has a possibility to takeover the PM’s position if he becomes the chairman of EPRDF.
